miles and miles, but many people suffer week after week with a saddle that isn't perfect for them. If you have an LBS that will let you test and return saddles, try saddle after saddle and remember that as you get in better shape and your butt gets broken in better, you will be more comfortable on a thinner saddle. I'm a clyde that is now using a Romin saddle that I could not have possibly used a year ago.
