We took the tandem out for a speed run yesterday. This was the same 200k route I rode for a personal best on my single bike about three weeks ago, when I had nearly perfect wind conditions. Well, we didn't have perfect wind conditions yesterday, as dstrong noted. But we took off with a tailwind and were really moving. One of the stronger LSR guys was riding with us on a single bike (and drafting). We got to the the first control at 53 miles out 17 minutes before the time opened, and that was a first for me. (Note that perm opening times are later than brevet opening times.) We ate and made a couple of bike adjustments, got the cards signed at the official time, and walked into the next control right when the time opened. But after that, we were riding back into the headwind and crosswind. We finished in 7:39, which is a personal best for me, with average rolling speed at 18.5 mph. And that was pulling the whole way, 127 miles.
