Similar thing was happening to me recently. I originally suspected the BB.
I spoke to my LBS and they suggested looking at the chain ring bolts. They were right. I took my chain ring apart, put a thin smear of grease on the surfaces (not the threads) and re-assembled. Now the noise is gone.
