Teflon belts for tires

After riding the Badger State Trail and the Sugar River Trails in Wisconsin this spring which was awesome, we heard about the Cowboy Trail in Nebraska and are planning to ride it in September. Doing a little research about the trail we found the folks up there warn about the puncture vines and advise to use teflon belts to avoid flat tires. I have to admit after riding the Katy Trail for years and other rails to trails in several States, this is the first time I've of this hazard as well as teflon belts. When I googled teflon belts for tires, one of the websites that popped up was the Cowboy Trail. Needless to say it made a believer out of me. Could anyone shed some light on the teflon belts. I'd appreciate it.
