I've been re-thinking which bike to use for commuting, and I'm going to try out the Iverson "Grand Touring" I got at a yard sale for five bucks. I think, of the three I have, it will make the best commuter bike (especially since it's not expensive) during the coming fall and hopefully, at least some, during the winter. Aside from new tires and tubes, the only thing I can see on it that needs fixing is the three-speed shifter. Miraculously, the front AND rear brakes work, and I already have reflective clearcoat, baskets, a computer and a comfy seat, and the generator headlights and taillight set is on its way.

Right now it only shifts into second and third gear, which isn't all that bad, I guess , compared to my Schwinn Traveler 10-speed which may or may not shift at all. I have noticed that on the cable running down from the (thumb) shift lever to the tube, there is a big nick/cut in the plastic, and possibly in the cable itself (I couldn't get outside to look at it again before I had to leave for work today). Could this explain why it won't shift into first? Can I swipe the cable off my parts bike to replace the one on the Iverson?

I'm still pretty new at this (and fairly broke, although the savings so far in gasoline have helped!!), so don't get too technical on me, ok? I just need to make it work and I can be pretty handy when I'm determined to fix something.

Thanks ahead of time to anyone who can help!
