As a person who has experiences both "square taper" cranks and the sram Omnium, I would highly reccomend the omnium. While you will never get as good a spin from the omnium, they are much easier to maintain and adjust the bearings. The priamy use of the crank that I have on my bike is for commuting, so resiliace is the primary factor that I am looking for, If i was on a track, I would probably be running a square taper crank. They spin much better and you don't really have to worry about keeping the internals clean and dry.
