I think vik is on the right track. If he was going to modify the bag instead of the rack he would have to modify every bag he wanted to use.
+1 - Modifying the bag is more of a PITA than changing the rack and a slick bag is important because that's the part that has to get hauled around. Last thing I want to do is hack the bag.
