My rule of thumb is that "why" questions rarely lead anywhere useful.
rsg, you might be obsessing on a small matter. Equip your bike with good tires. Original tires are not important. It's an item you expect to wear out, so it's not as if you're doing something inappropriate by putting new tires on an old bike.
