I had a friend who lived in TC for a couple years. One of his buddies took us to a course which was a mtn biking course in the summer, and a XC ski course in the winter. The climbs were so steep that the top of many climbs was a contest to see who could keep from either doing a wheely over backward, or lean too far forward and break the back tire loose. Usually, only 1 or 2 out of the 4 in our group would actually stay on the bike all the way to the top.

The highspeed descent which abruptly turned into 6" of loose sand was also memorable.
