Going up track gains elevation even though you are traveling farther. If one stays in the pole lane, racers pass without a gap and no one will let you in. You go to the end of an accelerating line. Also, from the top, you can see gaps, if any, to reenter the line and use the banking to accelerate to match speed while conserving energy.
