Hi,
If you want to listen to something, try an external speaker at not too loud a volume. You'll still be able to hear cars coming. I recommend against headphones for the reason you pointed out.
I often take different routes even though they are longer (I live 3 1/4 miles but usually take 6 1/2 or 9 1/2 miles to get into work).
