The ferry ride is stating to sound like the way to go... Plus going through the Williamnsburg / Jamestown area seems like a plus.

Plus 1 on using the ferry. You'll get to experience quite a unique town and experience, like you are in another country. Traffic will also be lighter using that route, although it will add quite a few miles to the ride.
