This whole need to hurry things along is because of overnight delivery and the fax machine. Until things "had to be there overnight," one was able to take pride and joy in their workday accomplishments.
Blame the French for the working fax machine: "In 1862, the Italian physicist Giovanni Caselli built a machine he called a pantelegraph (implying a hybrid of pantograph and telegraph), which was based on Bain’s invention but also included a synchronizing apparatus.
