battery change, sla to nimh etc

i bought an electric folding bike of ebay. Good deal i think, as its new, but been stored for two year in box.
SLA batterys were flat, so the seller had tried to charge the pack, without any luck. DEAD... Reading on forums he may have damaged the cells
as they would have possibly dried out.
The bikes is a 36v Mick Imaginarium aluminum folding bike.

Question is? i have 36v nimh bottle battery. From a cytronex electric bike. Can i wire the live and negative from the nimh
to the two terminals were the sla battery drops onto. then bike will work. Or will it violently implode.
If not do i stick with the sla. I probably strip down and replace the batterys like for like.
Or any recomendations or advice cheers
