I use Origin 8 drop bar ends on my hybrid (a Giant Rapid...some call it a flat bar road bike) to give myself additional hand positions. Do they work as well as the drop bar on my road bike? No, but they do work well enough for what they are.
As for your bar end positioning, there have been a couple of other posters here who have done something similar with good results.
