Hey veneer, as you can see from my nametag I am in your neck of the woods. There's another guy on the boards here who commutes up N First street also.

There is indeed a bike path that parallels 87 , called the Guadalupe River Trail. The VTA map shows it all chopped up as it was a few years ago, but they have been doing some major work on it -- Actually your timing is great, because the city is going to open up another stretch north of Santa Clara St. this weekend.. That'd be a pretty sweet ride if you could do most of the route off the surface roads. But of course don't let the lack of special bike facilities stop you from trying the commute. When I'm not riding the paint on San Tomas I just go up Bascom Ave from Campbell to Santa Clara in the right-hand lane and it's quite safe, and I reckon 1st St from downtown would be similar.
