Driver faces charges in crash with cyclist
Tuesday, August 30, 2005 Police say a Martinez man was intoxicated when he struck a 63-year-old bicyclist and drove a mile with him lodged in the car's windshield before abandoning the injured man behind an elementary school.
Richard Kyle Post, 25, of the 4200 block of Green Ivy Circle in Springlakes subdivision, was charged with hit-and-run, leaving the scene of an accident with injuries, driving under the influence, reckless driving, driving on the wrong side of the road, serious injury by a motor vehicle and false report of a crime, Columbia County sheriff's Capt. Steve Morris said. "We've seen a lot of things and nothing really surprises us, but this is tragic, unfortunate and very unique,'' Capt. Morris said.
He said police responded at about 9 p.m. Monday to a call from the home of Mr. Post's parents. Capt. Morris said a domestic dispute between Mr. Post and his father occurred when the father learned his son had returned home intoxicated.
As police were en route to the Green Ivy Circle home, Capt. Morris said, they noticed a bicycle in the road that appeared to have been hit by a vehicle.
At about the same time, Mr. Post called police from a Shell gas station at Columbia and Flowing Wells roads to say that he had been carjacked.
Capt. Morris said police found the car, a 1995 Honda Accord owned by Mr. Post's father, behind Martinez Elementary School off Flowing Wells Road. Havendra Sinha, of the 100 block of Springlakes Drive, was found on the ground next to the Honda. There was a hole in the car's windshield.
Mr. Sinha was airlifted Monday night to Medical College of Georgia Hospital, where he was in critical condition Tuesday, hospital spokeswoman Deborah Humphrey said.
A woman who answered the phone at Mr. Sinha's house Tuesday and identified herself as his wife said Mr. Sinha typically takes a walk or bike ride through Springlakes every night and that the neighborhood is usually very safe. The woman, who preferred not to give her first name, said Mr. Sinha is retired but had worked as a marketing vice president of GIW Industries in Grovetown.
Capt. Morris said Mr. Post's father told police that after he called authorities his son got into the Accord, which was blocked from behind. Police were told his son drove through the backyard and left on a back road.
Authorities suspect Mr. Post was driving on the wrong side of the road when he hit Mr. Sinha and proceeded to drive about for about a mile with Mr. Sinha still in the windshield, Capt. Morris said.
On Tuesday afternoon, Mr. Post was being held at the Columbia County Detention Center on a $13,100 bond, Capt. Morris said.
