...around here auto/car/truck stores look at me like I have 10 heads if I ask for anything metric...
Unless I'm mistaken, American car makers have used metric fasteners extensively for at least a decade or so. Even if they didn't, there are an awful lot of Asian and European cars on the road in the U.S. Any decent auto parts store should have metric nuts and bolts.
