found a solution with the help of the mechanic at my LBS. basically, you need to fiddle with both the adjustment screw on the brake arm and the bolt holding the brakes on the fork. by messing with those two and with the cable tension, i was able to find a position with enough clearance. i had to crank the brake adjustment screw as far as it would go in one direction (can't remember which one) and then twist the brakes in the fork. hope you can get it to work as well.

in case anyone else is interested, it's a jamis xenith comp with DA 7800 brakes, HED jet 5 (23mm C2 rim), and 25mm conti GP4000S tires.
