Actually that article states that witnesses said the cyclist sideswiped the car, that the cyclist was making a left turn on a red light. It's a straight NSEW intersection, the cyclist was apparently N bound, tried to turn W, and hit the car which was W bound. Hard to see how the motorist could have responded to, much less anticipated, the cyclist running the red light and turning into him.
I know he was going against the red light, I'm just thinking that if he hit the side of the car maybe it was avoidable on the driver's part. I guess this is a reminder as cyclists that if we break traffic rules we may pay the price with our lives. It just makes me sad whenever a cyclist dies.
