I rode my 41 year old Peugeot on my 27 mile round trip commute today. Neither it nor any of my other bikes, all steel, show any sign of breaking. (They do brake quite often though.)
Mine broke at the drive side rear drop out. Looked like fatigue. I could see the crack progression pattern. I had it welded and now use it on my trainer.
