Placement is a bigger issue than odd/even. I ride with 2, one front, one back; both on the right side. I figure, if I fall asleep on the ride, the off balanced load will cause me to run off the road rather than into traffic, plus the rear pannier protects the derailleur......so ya need 2 to do it up right.

Brits should load to the left I'd imagine.
