there's an old saying that people apply to guns, bikes, guitars, etc: "My biggest nightmare is that my wife thinks I died and sells my ______ (bikes/guns/guitars/other pricey toy) for the price I told her I paid for them."
The bike wasn't stolen, the guy had it sitting around for years and didn't use it anymore. He needed some quick cash and after looking at what they go for used he new wouldn't sell it quickly if he asked more than that for it.
