You do realize of course that modern women's bikes do have geometry differences as well to fit slight differences in body proportions compared to men (women usually have longer legs and shorter torso-s then men of the same height). When I cut up old bikes and re-weld them together I usually do a whole lot more to them then just add a top tube so I can't completely answer your question, heck most of the time by the time I'm done you have no idea what the original bike(s) looked like based on the end result.
same for me. there were other things about the bike i liked that made me work with it, but it did end up going from a womens to a mens more or less
