I've used a Princeton Tech Swerve tailight on a thin seat stays with success. It comes with rubber base adapter and a smaller o-ring to mount it on seat stays. I put it low on the seat stay so that if it were to pivot in toward the spokes it brushes against them but can't get caught and pivot into them.
