I've walked home twice in socks (two flats in rapid succession right after I gave one of my tubes away, and one snapped derailleur hanger), and on those long, sole-blistering walks, I admit to grumbling a little about karma being a load of tish. But I've also been picked up by kind strangers (weren't even cyclists) and driven home twice (snapped chain, snapped front derailleur) too--both refused to accept money. If you ride enough, eventually you're going to get stranded or walk home.
Maybe the OP's acquaintance just needed to cool off before getting on the Internet.
