Trek 6000 conversion ?s

My trek 6000's drivetrain is shot after 5 years of neglect and abuse; so I bought a Park Tool repair book and decided to fix it myself
I've researched converting it to an SS and tore the bike down to the BB/frame/fork..

My crank & chainrings(integrated) are useless BUT
the square taper bottom bracket (Shimano LP27E) is fine...(anyone know the spindle length?)
I can't seem to find any new mtb cranks for this BB but I read a post about using cheap BMX cranks (ie FMF cranks http://aebike.com/site/page.cfm PageID=30&SKU=CR7910)

$$$ IS an issue and I'll just be cruising around town/commuting so they dont have to be really beefy cranks..

Any suggestions would be appreciated as I'm bikeless till this thing is running again...
