You say this like it's surprising. But many of the worst crashes happen on straightaways. I remember an epic, Tour de France-style pileup in one of my collegiate races that spread to both sides of the road. Happened on a straight downhill. Corners can be tricky, sure, but people zone out when they think they're safe, and that's when things happen.
