I have done that same thing (riding with a team I have never met) and it is not a big deal. Just get your friend to introduce you to a few who ride around your pace and try to eat with them at the team dinner if you can. If not, there will be 13,000 other brand new riding buddies to meet out on the road. Good luck and thanks to all of you for riding!
