I have a feeling you're trolling, but on the off chance you're not the situation you describe is known as bridging and if you have some experience doing it you'll begin to soft pedal once you've closed to an appropriate distance for your speed and the group ahead to not run into them.

Back pedaling on the track is a waste of energy that you may need to keep up with a breakaway or contest a sprint plus it can cause contact and crashes from behind you.
