This is not the answer you want to hear, but the best bike for the price is the one that fits you best. What works for me, might not work for you, so you really need to go out and experience the bikes first hand. At a given price point, all the major brands fall pretty much inline with each other component spec wise, so it all comes down to fit(both geometry and intended usage). If you go out and narrow down a few bikes that you like, then it will be easier to determine which bike is the best for the money when comparing component spec.
