I felt as if it may be a bit much, but there's a person for everything at every price. Like I said I'm fairly new, and a tad lost as to what I should be looking for. It's your thread so you can derail it all you want. Best deal for a used commuter is generally a vintage mtb. They don't command a premium like vintage road bikes sometimes do. The fat tires are good for commuting although you'll probably want to swap out to slicks. And they have eyelets for racks and maybe fenders (but those may not interest you in San Diego). I have no idea whether this is your size but something like this would make a fine commuter at $165:
