I listened to music out there when I was new and fredly, but then I stopped for two reasons - first, my frustration with others (including joggers, rollerbladers, etc.) who couldn't hear me coming from behind no matter how hard I shouted (it's hard to set an example when you're also sporting an earbud), and second the realization that even if I kept it low so that I can hear my environment, that good cycling takes serious environmental awareness and music detracts.

OK, others have said the same thing.

third that maybe hasn't been said is that I want to hear things that maybe aren't so easy to hear - such as a new noise coming from my bike

Of course I listen to music on the trainer. There's almost no other way to get through that hour.

Favorite song for the trainer: Soul Meets Body (Death Cab for Cutie).
