I found this serial number decoder post from an old (2004) BOB mailing list thread

Assuming that serial number of H 724685 is correct, here's how that plays out:
H = made in August (8th letter, 8th month...skip "I" so "J" is September)
7 = made in 1987, which means it's a 1988 model year bike (every
BStone I've seen, and that's over 20, has a manufacturing year one
year before the model year)
24 = made on the 24th of that month
685 = the 685th of that model frame manufactured that month
