Thank you for clarifying that - that's exactly what the guy in the bike shop said. I was initially concerned because the wheel is off an old French bike from the 80s and after reading Sheldon Brown's site I thought it maybe a non-standard thread. It turned out it wasn't -I checked with my new thread gauge and it is 24 tpi.
