I'd wear a pro jersey if I was a spectator of a race that team was in. As far as cycling in one though, I would never.

As for associating it to sports teams-- who wears a 49ers jersey to the park with their buddies, or a red socks jersey to the local diamond for some saturday ball, or a Lakers jersey to the local pickup game? Sports fans don't usually play sports in pro sport gear. It's wearing a badge of honor that wasn't earned.

I do support the whole "don't mind what other people think" mantra, but I'd add that I, and many other people, can almost never take someone in a pro kit seriously.

Edit: Also, like I said, it's not that you can't, but just go buy a sweet Castelli kit instead. Not only will you look better, regardless if that is your goal, but you'll likely be more comfortable as well (most fake consumer pro kits are poorly made in china).
