Go to any bike shop and ask to see how a bike is packed when it's shipped from the factory. Everything they do is necessary or they wouldn't do it. Little box for the small parts. Plastic mushrooms on the ends of the axles. Even the gear that the bike is in matters. Most bike packing jobs by somebody other than a factory are inadequate.
