I'm using a 1 1/4" hitch with Kuat rack on a Ford Focus with no issues. They do say that bike weight is limited to 40lbs (I think) each, so one wouldn't want to be loading up DH bikes on their or anything. Still, if I had had the option, I would have preferred a 2" hitch, just for the added strength.
