YUP! My 13 year old sitll rides a 1988 Gary Fisher Hoo Koo E Koo that's in great shape with no shock. I was riding a pre-Cunningham 1989 Nishiki Ariel without a shock until about 2 months ago. Due to an injury to my neck, I added a Suntour shock with a 1 inch threaded steerer. While I am faster than I was before adding the shock, the thirteen year old still burns me every time. Oh to be young and fearless. (If I could figure out how to post my digitial pictures of his bike I'd love to post it).
