my '84 davidson came with similar kool-stops, the kind that have no holders like the continentals. they're not as beefy and squarish though. i think they're called the 'eagle 2.' they look more appropriate on this bike than continentals. they were all grey colored though and kinda ugly. so i painted them black. i made a cutout in a cereal box, pushed the pad through so i wouldn't paint the recessed part that will touch the rim, masked off the bolt, then sprayed the rounded backs of them. now they look like they're in pretty, black holders.
