MTB crank should work fine. I've done it before and had no issues. Most on here would consider a 1:1 gear ratio a VERY low granny gear. I would personally go with the 50/34 and a 11-27 cassette but I value smaller gear jumps than you might. I have seen some very nice looking MTB cranks though. I think Crank Brothers makes one. Expensive, but slick looking.
