Like most of my "outside the bike shop" suggestions Denatured Alcohol is indeed availiable at your local hardware store. (Home Depot is closest to me so that's where I get mine)
It's also found in camping / outdoor supply stores as stove fuel, and in cooking stores to fuel items such as Fondue pots. (Mmmmm molten cheese!)
