When I run 1.5" tires on a 26er for road and dirt-road riding I like to put a road crank on there. 53/42 on the Grey Goose. I've kept it on for STXC and CX too. All STXC in the little ring, a bit of big ring use on one CX course so far.

Some MTB FDs handle this better than others, so you may need a new one if existing one balks on the big rings. Front shifting is wack but you get used to it. Might be better with a road front derailleur but I haven't tried that yet.

42x11 on 1.5" takes me to 44mph at 120rpm. Only a couple of downhills around here where I'll use that.
