Why didn't they put left hand threads on the left side downtube braze-on

Riding my '85 Trek for the first time I quickly remembered something I didn't like about it when I owned it before. The left hand shift lever comes loose when you shift. An easy fix would have been to put left hand threads on that side so the spring pressure would tighten the screw as it rotates forward.
Any suggestions? I'm considering putting blue locktite on the threads. Would that be a bad idea?
