Aren't new, low drain, traceable tags going to be the new wave in product tracking?

I think these are already in use for container tracking and railcars, could be a small step to consumer level tags. I've read of forward thinking towards low drain tracking embedded in barcodes built into ever consumer product sold. The ability to track a product from factory to grave and every shelf it sits on in between.

Some Cell phones and laptops are coming with antitheft locator systems built in, may be GPS I guess. What's the system that's coming on line with new cell phones, is it GPS or triangulation? I'm betting wireless triangulation.
