The o ly time I've seen a chain between rings was using a 7 or 8 speed chainring with a 10 speed (narrower) chain. The edge of the chain would ride on the tips of the teeth and not drop onto the small ring when moving down from the big ring. Fixed it by putting the proper rings back on there.
