I've done both, and it really comes down to how much hassle it is to get your bike there. I fly from Europe direct, so for me its pretty easy. Of course, you need appropriate transportation once you arrive to transport your box. Always use a hard box, or really modern soft case, otherwise your bike will most likely be destroyed. I have flown for many years with bikes and can attest to this. A good hardcase is a great investment if you think you will fly at least once per year. Otherwise, and especially if your trip is not too long, there are many very affordable rental options.

Pro tip: bring your favourite saddle and pedals with you.
