i wipe the dirt and grit off the chain before every ride. that's usually every day. then lube, it takes about 1 minute. so i guess i engage in a pre-emptive strike.

OTOH, i have one beater bike that rarely gets any kind of attention, on it, i've had reason to oil the chain when i feel the grit on the chain through the pedals. (you may think i'm kidding... i'm not)
