Advice on converting fork?

Hi folks -

I am considering purchasing a used Fisher Big Sur. It has a Manitou SX fork and since this'll be a utility bike for me (tooling around town, biking to work), I was considering replacing the fork so that it's rigid.

First question: Is this a bad idea? Seems to me non-suspension will be better going up hills, etc. But I'm currently commuting on a mtn. bike w/suspension (crummy, but it's there) so I don't know what it feels like to not have one.

Second question: What kind of fork do you recommend switching to? I don't want to spend a ton of money on the converstion.

Third question: Is this something easy to do, bike maintenance-wise, or is it something more sophisticated, that I should have my LBS handle?

Thanks ya'll.
