I wish I could commute. I live in Houston, though, so that would require a shower at work. Also I have to take my daughter to school or pick her up 4 days each week, so there's only one day I could possibly commute on. Also I like driving my car.
I used to run more errands on my bike, but lately I've only been riding my road bike. It has no panniers or baskets or anything. And taking the hybrid to the store falls into that category of "not worth it" short rides now.
Yeah, Houston is rough. Austin is a bit better, but one can still get pretty damp. Oh, and as for your daughter preventing you from commuting four days out of the week, my three sons say "Hi!"
This said, I don't go on 20+ mile weekend rides as I'm with the boys then, so we just enjoy our bikes in different ways and that's okay. Not trying to hector you.
